How to Take a Passport Photo at Home
Taking a usable passport photo at home is straightforward with the right setup. Use any modern smartphone or digital camera — the key is good lighting and a plain background.
What Makes a Good Photo
- Eyes open, mouth closed — neutral expression
- Plain white or light background — don't stand in front of windows, patterned walls, or doors
- Good natural light — face should be evenly lit with no harsh shadows
- Camera at eye level — not angled up or down
- Frame shoulders and chest — not just a face close-up. Body should be visible at least to the elbows
- Enough space around the head — leave room above the hair and on both sides
- No glasses — required for US passports and most other countries
Quick Tips for Better Results
- Stand 4–6 feet from a plain white wall in a well-lit room
- Shoot in natural daylight if possible, or use two lights — one on each side — to reduce shadows
- Use portrait mode on your phone to avoid distortion
- Take several shots and pick the sharpest one
Photos That Won't Work
- Too close — not enough room above hair or below chin
- Dark or patterned background
- Heavy shadows on the face or background
- Blurry or low-resolution image
- Sunglasses or tinted lenses
