Urgent US Passport — Emergency & Same-Day Service

If you need a US passport urgently, the process depends on how soon you're traveling. Here's exactly what to do in each scenario.

Life-or-Death Emergency (Travel Within 24–48 Hours)

If you have a life-or-death family emergency — serious illness, injury, or death of an immediate family member requiring international travel within 24–48 hours — you must appear in person at a passport agency. Documentation of the emergency may be required.

Traveling in 5 Days or Less

Call 1-877-487-2778 — the NPIC will attempt to schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency. Appointments are limited and not guaranteed. Have your 9-digit application locator number ready (begins with 95 for online applications).

Traveling in 6–14 Days

Call 1-877-487-2778. The agency processing your application will be notified of your travel date and will prioritize your passport accordingly.

Expedited Service (2–3 Weeks)

For less urgent situations, you can request expedited processing on any passport application:

• Cost: $60 per application, in addition to regular fees
• Delivery: Two-way overnight delivery is strongly recommended
• Completed passports are sent via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation unless you pay for overnight return delivery
• Do not include prepaid return envelopes or stamps with your application

You can upgrade to expedited service, change delivery options, or update your mailing address through your MyTravelGov account until your application is approved.
